Archaeology

Excavating the glassworks at Prestongrange, 2005East Lothian is an area rich in archaeogical heritage. It is home to Scotland's oldest house (dated to c. 8300BC) from the Mesolithic hunter-gatherer period to many fantastic Iron Age hill forts- Traprain Law and North Berwick Law being just two that are easily accessible. East Lothian also has many lovely medieval churches and dramatic castles such as Hailes, Tantallon and Dirleton. The county's industrial past can also clearly be seen at places such as the Prestongrange Museum. In essence, the East Lothian countryside is filled with reminders of our history and heritage.

A colour leaflet, describing some of the best archaeological and historical sites in the county from the prehistoric to medieval period, is now available in museums, libraries and tourist information centres. A digital copy is also available.
