Natural heritage - biodiversity

Moorland, woodland, farmland, rivers and the coast combine to produce a very varied and stunning East Lothian landscape. Over 7000 species of wild plant and animal live in this natural jigsaw. These include lovely wildflowers such as poppies, cowslips, cranesbills and orchids; dramatic birds of prey such as the buzzard, sparrowhawk and peregrine falcon; cuddly mammals such as otters, badgers and whales; well-known butterflies such as orange tip, peacock and painted lady; less famous insects such as shield bugs and gall wasps.

All these habitats and the 7000 species can be considered part of the biodiversity of East Lothian. This biodiversity is what makes East Lothian such a vibrant, exciting and enjoyable place. East Lothian has produced a Biodiversity Action Plan to help enhance our diversity of life.
